Frequently Asked Questions:

Do you take my insurance?

We work with some insurance companies, not all. The only company we are in-network with is Medicare (this means we accept payment from Medicare- you would be responsible for the 20% that they do not pay for, unless you have a secondary insurance that we accept). For all other commercial insurance companies, we would have to call and obtain eligibility of benefits on your behalf to decide if we can work with them on an out of network basis. This is very specific to each person’s plan. We do a courtesy benefits and eligibility check and will explain everything to you at the time of your FREE consultation (a.k.a. Discovery Visit).

Why do you only take some insurance, but not all?

The reason we have opted to only work with Medicare is because Medicare is a Federally funded program and they are still paying practitioners a fair market compensation. The same is not true for the commercial insurance companies. Over the last 10 years commercial insurance companies have been increasing premiums and reducing payment to Physical Therapists. In order to continue to stay in business most PT practices were forced to see more patients in the hour in order to make up for the loss. At some practices the Physical Therapist is seeing 3-4 patients at the same time. The thing that gets sacrificed with this model is QUALITY of care. At Universus Physical Therapy we are completely against this type of model. It does a disservice to the patient and it does not allow for Physical Therapy to be practiced at its highest level.

Can you work with me if I do not have insurance?

Yes, absolutely. We will give you a specific breakdown of exactly what you would owe us per session after your plan of care has been developed. We will let you know exactly how many sessions we recommend for your specific problem and what the cost will be out of pocket.

What is the difference in Quality of Care at Universus Physical Therapy?

The biggest and most obvious difference is that we only book ONE patient every 45 minutes. We also only see ONE patient at a time in a private treatment room. Your Physical Therapist is with you the entire session. This is very different from most places you might have been to. We are cueing you and coaching you on the proper way to do all the very specific exercises we have prescribed. We are also all trained in manual therapy. This means that we are doing massage, manipulation, hands-on stretching, etc., depending on what is needed for your specific case. We do not EVER use “cookie-cutter” programs. Your program is 100% individualized and has been designed just for you and your issues.

What can I expect at the first visit at Universus Physical Therapy?

At your first visit you will have a very thorough examination of your body. The session will begin with an interview with you; where we will ask what has been going on, what your medical and injury history is and what you are looking to achieve (your goals). The physical examination will include an assessment of your movement patterns, your walking pattern, your posture, the way you breathe, the way you sit, stand, bend. We will also look very closely at your range of motion in the specific area of concern, however we look above and below the area of concern to decide if the problem is there due to some compensations you may be doing as a result of old injuries. We also assess your functional strength and capacity for doing the things you need to do in life. At the end of the examination you will get a summary from the physical therapist as to what they have found, how we can help and what the plan will be for your recovery. The #1 goal of the first visit is to decide what the “root cause” of your problem is.

What if I don’t want to make another appointment after my first visit? Is that a problem?

Absolutely not! Because our examination is so thorough we do have people seeking our advice on what we believe is going on with them or what the root cause of their problem is. Some people simply want that examination and would like to try solving the problem on their own before opting into Physical Therapy. That is something we do a lot of for people. After the first visit you are not required to continue.

Is Physical Therapy at Universus expensive?

I am sure you have heard the saying, “you get what you pay for”. If you have read the answers to the questions previously you have probably gathered that we are a very different type of practice. Our focus is on getting you back to doing the things you love and value. We have Doctors of Physical Therapy (not inexperienced aides) working one-on-one with you for 45 minutes. You will see change and that is the point. The people we have helped will tell you that the expense of the kind of PT we provide is well worth it. Whether something is expensive is very subjective from one person to the next. We are priced at what we are worth. We can get you specifics on the cost once we have reached out to your insurance company and figured out what they are willing to contribute. We also offer payment plans so that we can work with just about anyone at the frequency that they can afford payment.

I’ve been to a few different Physical Therapy places and it did not help, how do I know you will help me?

We get so many people telling us that they have tried other PTs, massage, chiro, etc. and nothing has helped. Clearly we cannot say with certainty that we can help before performing an examination on you, but I will say that we have been many people’s “last stop”. Meaning, we have had hundreds of patients tell us that we are the only PT that has helped them. Or they will say that they never had much confidence in PT until they came to Universus PT (check out our reviews and you can see for yourself).

What makes Universus Physical Therapy different from other PT places?

Your FULL recovery is our #1 priority. Many places will say that, yet they will cut you off once insurance stops paying and don’t follow up with you. We have built in wellness services that will help you stay on the road to recovery even after insurance stops paying. We follow up with you 1 month after PT has ended, then after 3 months and then again after 6 months. The likelihood of most issues coming back is very high. We develop a plan to ensure that doesn’t happen to you. We give you a set of exercises that address your specific problem (we have a special app for this) and we keep adding and taking away exercises as you improve, while tracking your progress. We encourage our patients to come back in for a “wellness check-up”. Here we re-evaluate your progress, make recommendations and add to your home program. Basically, once you are a part of the family, we want to make sure you thrive in life without pain! You will also always have a place to come back to in the case that anything is bothering you or if you simply have a question about how to deal with something. We are only a phone call or email away and are HAPPY to answer any of your questions even if you are not coming in for PT at that time.

Do I need a referral from a doctor or can I just call in and come see you?

You can come in for an examination without a doctor’s referral. Doctors of Physical Therapy are allowed to perform an examination and treat a person for 30 days or 10 visits (whichever comes first) without a doctor’s referral.

I’m not in any pain per-se, I’m just experiencing a lot of stiffness and tightness and am a little worried. Am I right to be considering PT?

Yes! This is actually the best time to seek out help. If you are not in pain “yet”, this is a great time to figure out why you feel the way you do. It could be something very simple that can be addressed with the right set of exercises/stretches/manual therapy technique, etc. Most pains start with feeling stiffness and tightness. It is definitely a great time to nip it in the bud, before it turns into pain!

Isn’t physical therapy just for young people who have injured themselves in sports?

We specialize in helping people who are aged 40+ so that they can stay active, healthy and mobile without the use of pharmaceuticals or dangerous surgeries. Our model is really geared around the person who truly values health and wants to stay active or get more active and isn’t sure how to go about doing that. Because we do such a thorough assessment of your body, we can help design a program that fits your specific needs so that you can continue to do what you love. People with chronic conditions or issues that other PTs have not been able to help with is our speciality.

How long before I feel a difference with physical therapy?

Typically people will be out of pain within 3-5 sessions through the use of specialized hands on treatments, i.e. mobilizations, manipulation, myofascial release, trigger point release, etc. Pain relief is only one aspect of what we will do for you. The reason we usually recommend more than 8 sessions is so that we can ensure the problem does not come back. Typically around session 5-8 we are correcting your weaknesses and imbalances and getting you back to doing what you love. After 8 sessions we will work on strength and stability to avoid re-injury and maintain full function. Many of our patients decide to continue with us past 10-15 sessions so that they can work on their Fitness without the chance of doing anything that isn’t appropriate for their body or that would re-injure them.

How does your Fitness Program work?

As experts in movement and exercise for those who have had an injury, we recommend you participate in our “Fitness Program for Rehab Patients” instead of going to someone who may not be trained to work with your special rehab needs and consideration. This is a 3 to 6 month program. It involves development of a home exercise program as well as working one on one with a Physical Therapist at a frequency that is determined by you and your PT.

How does your Wellness Program work?

The final stage of our program pathway is to promote an optimal level of health by reducing stress, promoting more youthful movement, and whole body wellness. This is a 12-month stage. We will make recommendations that will address nutrition, stress reduction and general health. We work closely with yoga practitioners, acupuncturists, cranio-sacral therapists, we offer myofascial release, strength and conditioning and health coaching. There is special pricing for our patients on all wellness services.

What happens if I get there and I am not happy with the physical therapy at the end?

We will refund the money you have spent with us, no questions asked.

Why did my general practitioner tell me not to try PT and just rest?

Because your GP is not a rehabilitation specialist. They are likely very well meaning and do not want to cause you any harm, however they do not know what we know about injury recovery. Rest is almost always NOT the right thing to do. They also don’t realize that the type of PT we do exists. They do not know about how detailed our examination is and how specific our program is. They envision a “typical” run of the mill PT place where you are sat around not being supervised, doing exercises that you are not sure how to do and probably injuring yourself. In our humble opinion that type of an environment is NOT Physical Therapy.
