Dr. Alex Heuwetter

Doctor of Physical Therapy

I am born and raised in Huntington, so I am very familiar with and engaged in the Huntington community. I grew up playing sports all over Long Island, earning varsity letters in basketball and volleyball. I attended Ithaca College in upstate New York, where I continued my athletic career as a member of Ithaca’s Women’s Basketball team for four years. After undergrad I continued my education at Ithaca College to earn my Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

I have experience working in outpatient orthopedic and acute care settings, treating a variety of age groups with musculoskeletal, neurologic, and oncologic conditions. I’ve treated patients with acute injuries and helped return them back to sport or work, as well as patients who’ve been experiencing chronic pain and therefore need a prolonged rehabilitation approach.

A core value I am passionate about is the importance of balance. As a working population, it can be easy for us to fall into a strict routine that doesn’t allow much flexibility, or causes stress and anxiety when we try to break out of that routine in order to enjoy all that life has to offer. Therefore I am very passionate about promoting ways to restore balance in our lives, and finding ways individuals can stay committed to their responsibilities while also carving out time for them to enjoy hobbies, participate in relaxation/de-stressing activities, or spending time with friends and family.

“Sometimes we search for one thing, but discover another.” -Barney Stinson

I am a Physical Therapist! Something that patients have to deal with that I would love to fix is that unfortunately patients often don’t feel heard in the healthcare industry, as it seems like doctors visits are becoming shorter and shorter and patients are receiving the appropriate care. As a clinician, I want to fix this problem with my patients–I want them to be able to have adequate time to explain their current issues, as well as be able to vent about other problems that may be impacting their health. In addition, I want to show compassion on my end, and show that I will take all of my effort to make sure they receive the care they deserve.

Conditions that I enjoy treating are lower extremity injuries, as well as patients who struggle with balance and coordination. In general, I enjoy problem solving with patients about how they can adapt their lifestyles and find ways to implement their HEP in their daily lives.

When I am not working, I enjoy going to the gym and Pilates classes — exercise not only keeps me physically healthy but I’ve found is great for my mental health! I also enjoy taking my 3 dogs for walks, baking, and going to the beach in the summer!
